749 Lecture by Lord Mark Malloch-Brown

This year’s 749 Lecture will be given by Old Marlburian, former parent and former Chairman of Council, Lord Mark Malloch-Brown (C1 1967-71) and is entitled ‘The Broken Clock: A Century of Leadership and Service’.

The annual 749 Lecture was set up as a tribute to the 749 Old Marlburians who gave their lives in the Great War. The theme of these lectures is on the subject of service and making a difference to others.

Lord Malloch-Brown plans to trace how there was a crisis of confidence in elites after the First World War. Their influence nevertheless was sustained through the Gilded Age until economics caught up with politics and war. Today we are at another moment where trust and legitimacy of leadership are under challenge. What are the enduring human answers and political strategies for fixing that?
