Jonathan Tuckey (C2 1983-88) and his company Tuckey Design Studio has won a prestigious RIBA National Award, celebrating the Rammed Earth House homestead as one of the best architectural projects in the UK for 2026.  The building has been praised for its pioneering application of rammed earth, as well as it’s collaborative design involving an array of talented craftspeople. The judges stated, ‘This is a house that reconciles innovation with tradition, craft with creativity, and generosity with ambition. It demonstrates how architecture can inhabit a place with warmth, intelligence and grace, offering a phenomenological experience of exceptional depth.’

Rammed-earth construction is a traditional technique that goes back for centuries, known for its sustainable qualities; where a moist mix of locally sourced natural soil – like sand, gravel, silt and clay is tightly packed into a temporary mold (formwork). One significant benefit is its high thermal mass: like brick or concrete, it absorbs heat during the day and releases heat at night.
