David was born in Singapore on June 18th 1939 – his father (an OM) was imprisoned by the Japanese and died in a POW camp in Burma ten days after being liberated during the Second World War. David’s early school days were in South Africa but because his father and three brothers (Victor, John, David and Derrick Anderson) were Old Marlburians he was awarded a scholarship to go to Marlborough College in 1952. His claim to fame is that he started the Grantham Casuals Football Club together with Tom Gliksten, and he was the first captain. His other claim is that he played in the final of the Eton Fives Public Schools Competition with Tony Goodfellow.  His regular partner at Marlborough was the Master at that time, namely Tommy Garnet. His Summerfield housemaster was F.L. Coggin (Cogs) and David never forgot how kind Cogs was to him, and the friendship remained until Cogs died.

After leaving school, David spent five years in the British Police in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and then the Northern Rhodesia Police (now Zambia) but was discharged by the new President Kaunda after Independence in 1964. He started his teaching career at Cordwalles Prep School for Boys in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.  His second school was St Peter’s Prep in Johannesburg where he became Second Master and Boarding House Master. Finally he became Headmaster of Pridwin Prep (associated with King Arthur) where he remained for 20 years.

He retired to Cape Town where he taught children on a one-on-one basis for another 20 years, until Covid, thus teaching  for  over  56 years.  He died of a heart  attack on 19th February 2026, aged 87.  He leaves his wife, Eve, two children, Heather and Victor, and three grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremy Keith, and Gracie.
