We are delighted to announce a forthcoming exhibition of work by Dr Niall Hamilton titled Sacred Place, in the Mount House Gallery between the 7th November and the 7th December. The works on display will be for sale and all proceeds will go to the Marlborough Difference Campaign to support bursaries.
Niall’s connection with Marlborough College dates back over 40 years. He was an inspirational teacher in the History of Art and Art Departments; was Housemaster of B1 for nine years and then Director of Admissions for ten years. He has continued to work for the College in a variety of roles and is currently helping the Development Office.
Of the work on display, Niall said:
So many great medieval works of art and architecture in this country were destroyed or allowed to fall into a state of ruin in the years which followed the sixteenth century Reformation. The beauty and the scale of the loss, and indeed the magnificent objects and structures which survived the devastation, have fascinated me since schooldays, as have the magnificent creations of the nineteenth century Gothic Revival. A few of the works shown in the exhibition date from student days, but most of the pictures emerged in recent years. They depict structures which never existed, but they echo the forms of lost shrines, holy places which drew pilgrims from afar.
Marlborough, with its great chapel and neighbouring neolithic mound, is a sacred place which should be as accessible as possible to young people in search of the marvels provided by a great education.
The College is exceptionally grateful to Niall for sharing his inspirational Art and for his generosity in supporting the Marlborough Difference Campaign’s ongoing fundraising activity. We hope that many of you will be able to enjoy a visit to this wonderful exhibition when you are on campus for matches, exeat or indeed the Carol Services.
