On September 21, Hector Mackellar (C1 2014–19) will be taking on IRONMAN Wales — a gruelling test of endurance comprising a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km marathon, with over 3,000 metres of elevation gain — all in a single day.
Hector is competing in support of Helen & Douglas House, a charity that provides specialist hospice care for children with life-limiting and terminal conditions, along with vital support for their families.
He first raised money for Helen & Douglas House at the age of 11, when he was invited to visit the hospice. That visit left a lasting impression, as Hector witnessed first-hand the warmth, compassion, and round-the-clock care offered — not only for the children, but also for their parents, siblings, and wider families.
Founded as the world’s first children’s hospice, Helen & Douglas House continues to lead the way in providing care for babies and children up to the age of 18. The hospice creates a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment where families can make precious memories together, even during the most difficult times.
To prepare for IRONMAN Wales, over the past nine months Hector has:
Run just over 600 km — the equivalent of running from his office in Moorgate to Edinburgh Castle.
Cycled 4,550 km — more than riding from Land’s End to John o’Groats three times, while also climbing the equivalent elevation of summiting Everest nearly four times.
Swum just over 100 km — the same as swimming from Dover to Calais three times.
You can support Hector here, and your donation will help Helen & Douglas House continue to provide expert medical care, emotional support, and a sense of peace for families when they need it most.
