“Bill” (C1 1953-57) as he was always known, of Winterbourne Monkton, passed away peacefully on 11th September 2024 aged 85, surrounded by his family.
Born on the Wirral on 23rd May 1939 to Mary & John Buxton (C1, 1914-1919) where he lived his early years alongside his older sister, Helen.
During his time at the college Bill was appointed both a Prefect as well as Head of House. He enjoyed much sporting success including playing for the XI in both cricket and hockey alongside being Captain of shooting, a sport he loved and continued with all his life, shooting up until the year he died. He loved the College and took great pride that his son CJL Buxton (C1 1986 – 1991) and his grandchildren have followed him through the College.
Following his time at Marlborough, Bill graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge before joining Lever Brothers. He remained at Unilever for his entire career, retiring in 1999.
Reflecting on his life most remember Bill for his sense of humour, his twinkling blue eyes and his devotion to his wife Sonia of 56 years.
His love of the college was central to his move to Wiltshire in 2006. As a member of the 1843 club and with three of his grandchildren at the college, Bill was often spotted cheerily walking around the campus usually accompanied by his dogs.
As an avid sports fan he enjoyed many an afternoon with friends in the Long room at Lords as well as numerous trips to Twickenham. With his Merseyside roots he was a self-proclaimed lifelong ‘Reds’ fan although when pushed he would cheerily admit to not knowing any of the current crop of players!
Away from the pitches he was passionate about singing, spending many happy hours singing with both the college and Swindon choral societies. His love of music led them to a many of the world’s great opera houses from St Petersburg to Sydney and numerous in between during his early retirement years.
Bill is survived by Sonia, Nick and Christopher and his four adoring grandchildren. A wonderful memorial service was held in the college chapel in February.
