Captain of the 1st XI Cricket (and leading run scorer), 1st XV Rugby, 1st XI Hockey, School Prefect and, many years later, President of the Marlburian Club, Peter (C2 1944-49) was a Marlborough man through and through.
Peter was the second of 11 Worlidges to go to Marlborough College since the war and he remained closely associated with the school for 80 years. Marlborough was a formative experience for him, making lifelong friends and developing strong values of mutual respect and integrity.
Married for 68 years to his adored wife, Shirley, Peter was a true family man and loved nothing more than being around his four children, Anna, Chris, Joey and Pip, his seven grandchildren and one great grandson, sharing stories and wherever possible, playing sports.
Peter represented the Public Schools Cricket XI vs Combined Services at Lords in 1949, having a good partnership with Colin Cowdrey (the future England Captain). Always a keen all round sportsman, he remained playing good golf into his 94th year – several times shooting less than his age – quite a testament to his healthy longevity.
Peter had a hugely successful career as a Lloyd’s Marine Insurance Broker for 42 years. Starting at Leonard Hammond in 1952, followed by Arbon Langrish and Clarksons, he became a leading market Oil & Gas broker. He then founded and ran a successful Energy Division at Thomas Miller & Son from 1979 until his retirement in 1993; travelling the world, building business relationships and making lifelong friends.
One of the most striking things about Peter was his energy, enthusiasm and finding time for an extraordinarily wide range of interests. He was a highly active member of over 30 clubs, societies and charities, multiple cricket and golf clubs, including over 60 years as a member of the MCC. He was President of the Marlburian Club in 1995 and Master of the Turners Livery Company in 1997.
Peter was a fun, loving, caring, respected and much admired man, who had time and interest in everyone and every age. He lived a wonderful life, full to the brim with warmth, love, family and friends, forged in his strong Christian faith. He is greatly missed by so many.
