Robert “Bruce” George (C3 1942-46) sadly passed away on Friday, 14th February 2025, aged 96, in his nursing home on the Isle of Wight.

Bruce was born on 9 June 1928 to Bobby and Betty George in Invergordon Scotland. The first of four children.

He attended a variety of schools whilst his parents moved around the world with the Royal Air Force before he settled as a boarder at Marlborough College. He was separated from his parents during WWII, whilst his father was serving as Air Attache to Turkey in Ankara. Consequently, he spent holidays whilst at school up in Invergordon with his grandparents and one of his brothers.

Bruce excelled at Marlborough College, particularly in sports and was offered a place at Cambridge University to read history. However, he insisted that he wanted to enter the RAF and started at Cranwell College as an officer cadet.

He graduated from Cranwell in 1949 as a commissioned flying officer – and was posted to fly Meteors, followed by postings to Leuchars near St Andrews where Bruce met his wife, Vicky. For the next few years, they moved around together wherever the RAF posted them, including an exchange posting with the Royal Australian Airforce.

Back in the UK from Australia in 1957, Bruce & Vicky’s first son was born followed, by another son in 1961 and then daughter in 1963. Flying duties in the RAF came to an end on V-Bombers in the mid-60s and were followed by various RAF postings in the UK until Bruce left the RAF in 1977. Bursar roles came next, at Dulwich College followed by the Ursuline High School in Ilford before Bruce retired from work life in 1996 to live on the Isle of Wight.

His retirement life on the Isle of Wight included continued private flying from Sandown Airport, together with working as secretary of the Island’s Air Crew Association.
