The Right Reverend Mark Santer (C2 1950-55) died on Wednesday 14th August aged 87.
Mark was born in December 1936 and was the son of a parish priest, receiving a scholarship to the College. He was a gifted musician, later becoming the regular organist at Queen’s College Cambridge, and often recalled his experience of playing the organ at Marlborough.
He went on to study Classics, having taken A levels in Hebrew, Ancient Greek and Latin, and from that went on to study Theology and become ordained in the Church of England. He also taught Theology, both as Dean of Clare College Cambridge, and as Principal of Westcott House, a C of E theological College.
Mark was Bishop of Kensington from 1981-87, and Bishop of Birmingham from 1987 to 2002.
He died peacefully at home with his family at his side. Mark bore these last difficult days in a spirit of deep faith in God, and his mind remained as sharp as ever. His family witnessed his lack of fear, his sense of peace, his content and preparedness.
