James Land Obituary

James Land (PR 1946-49), brother to Robert (PR 1944-48), died 19th September 2023. Below is the obituary written by one of his best partners and friend in Price Waterhouse.

We mourn the passing away of one of the “characters” of PWE Europe, James Gordon Murray Land, OBE, at the age of 91. 

James Murray Land was born on September 10, 1932 in Kobe, Japan and passed away on September 19, 2023 in Madrid, Spain.

He was educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire – one of the UK’s prestigious private schools.

He joined Price Waterhouse, Madrid in September 1955, transferred to Rome in April 1960, to Tripoli in January 1963, to Milan in August 1965.  He was admitted to partnership in 1968.  He transferred in 1974 to Barcelona as Partner in Charge, and finally to Madrid in July 1981.  From 1981 to 1990, he was Finance Partner for PW Spain. From 1990 till his retirement in September 1993, he was responsible for Partnership Matters.

He was an Associate of the Society of Incorporated Accountants in 1955 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  He was President of the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain 1977-79;  Honorary Secretary General of the Council of British Chambers of Commerce in Continental Europe 1980-81.  He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979.  He was President of the British Society of Catalunya in 1981.

His hobbies included painting, music, photography, philately and Egyptology.  

He is survived by his wife Menchu de Haro Land, and his children Tris (aka Jonathan) and Tessa (aka Teresa), as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.
