Brian McElney (B1 1946-50)

You are warmly invited to celebrate the life of Brian McElney (B1 1946-50) at The Oriental Club in London on Wednesday 1st November 2023.

Brian developed an exceptional knowledge of East Asian Art, sourcing the majority of his collection in Hong Kong between the 1950s and 1990s. Following his retirement, he founded The Museum of East Asian Art in Bath as an independent educational charity in order to showcase his collection.

The Museum was at the centre of Brian’s life in Bath. This year marks the 30th anniversary of its opening, and we pay tribute to Brian through a unique exhibition entitled ‘From Hong Kong to Bath: A Lifelong Journey of Collecting’. With rare historical photographs, film and a display of 30 treasures from the collection, the exhibition looks at Brian’s fascinating life and acknowledges the contribution of communities in Hong Kong and Bath which have helped to shape our Museum and its collection over the decades.

Please join us in celebrating Brian’s life and his vision, and honouring his legacy – this year and in the years to come.
