David White (LI 1977-80), Garter King of Arms, proclaimed the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III on the balcony of St James’s Palace, London, on Saturday 10 September 2022.

His Majesty The King was formally proclaimed at the Accession Council, held at St James’s Palace. After the Accession Council, the Principal Proclamation was made from the balcony overlooking Friary Court at St James’s Palace. “Three cheers for Majesty the King,” White shouted from the balcony, prompting a response of “hip, hip, hurrah” from soldiers below.

David White became Garter King of Arms, the senior King of Arms, and the highest rank of an officer of arms in July 2021. Since 1415, the Garter has been the principal adviser to the sovereign of the United Kingdom with respect to flag-flying, ceremony, and heraldry.

The Accession Council was televised for the first time in history and is available to view here.
