A Discussion on Business in Asia; Covid Challenges and Opportunities

The Marlburian Club is pleased to invite you to attend our first virtual event focused on Asia on Monday 21st June at 8pm Singapore time/1pm UK time.

The event will be an informal discussion between a panel of OMs from a range of different industries on the topic of ‘Business in Asia; Covid Challenges and Opportunities’.

Panellists will discuss some of the challenges faced by their respective industries in the past year as well as some of the unforeseen opportunities. Our chair for the event will be Douglas Wong (C3 1981-86). Douglas is an editor at Bloomberg Intelligence in Hong Kong. He is also the author of “HSBC: Its Malaysia Story and former president of Hong Kong’s Foreign Correspondents’ Club.

The panellists are;

Joe Jelinek (CO 1990-95) – Joe has more than fifteen years of experience working in Asia and is currently based in Singapore. He is Research Director at Kapronasia, a financial technology market research and consulting firm covering payments, banking, and capital markets. Before moving to Singapore, he ran a sourcing outfit based in China and was the Executive Manager at the British Chamber of Commerce in Guangdong.  He holds a Master of Science in Globalization and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Anthony Lee (BH 1981-86) – CEO of AIG in Malaysia. With over 7 years in the Malaysian Insurance industry as CEO of AIG Malaysia and 4 years as the Chairman of the General Insurance Association of Malaysia, Antony has extensive knowledge and experience in representing industry issues locally and at the ASEAN level through the ASEAN Insurance council. In addition, he is also chairman of the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII) and a board member of the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Amcham), as well as the Ombudsman for Financial Services (OFS) and the Financial Community Outreach Programme (FINCO).

Kate Richdale (SU 1984-86) – Head of Asia Pacific Investment Banking at KKR in HK. Kate joined KKR in 2019 and works with KKR’s Asian investing businesses to assist in advancing the deal origination pipeline and developing strategic client relationships across the region. She sits on the Asia IC, Asia PMC and ROC committees. She joins KKR from Goldman Sachs & Co. in Hong Kong where she was Chairman of Investment Banking in Asia ex-Japan, prior to which she was the Co-Head of its Investment Banking Division. Prior to her role at Goldman Sachs, she was Head of Investment Banking for Asia Pacific at Morgan Stanley.

Mark Shaw (CO 1982-87) – Mark Shaw is a Director of The Shaw Organisation Group of Companies in Singapore, a family run Cinema business and Real Estate holding company. He is also the Chairman of the Orchard Road Business Association, a precinct management association for Orchard Road, Singapore’s premiere shopping street.

The discussion will last for approximately half an hour and be followed by a Q&A. All OMs are welcome to attend.
