Botanic Shed aims to help children and young adults flourish both socially and cognitively by teaching them to observe and understand nature’s processes and by bringing nature into their physical environment.
The way they do that is by putting a lot of love and care and scientific research into everything they do.
They create and provide nature-based artwork, educational content and experiences that inform and inspire children and young adults to connect with nature in order to build their own strength and resilience.
It is run by Lara Cowan (MO 1992-97) a trained Horticulturalist, Horticultural Therapist and regular broadcaster on BBC Radio, who set up her first business, Grenadine Escape while at University. Along the way she has also helped develop a mindfulness coaching business with former Monk and Inter-Faith Chaplain at Imperial College, Karuna Priya, featured in the Financial Times and The Telegraph and volunteered for the gardening and mental health charities such as the National Garden Scheme.
“This all started when I realized that a connection to nature had been serving me as an antidepressant, helping me through major life traumas and I could see how it also supported my late father and my brother through their mental illnesses.”
