Ride 4 Alex and Rory – Dr Swift’s (CR 2011 – ) cycle challenge from John O’Groats to Land’s End
On Monday 17th August Dr Swift (CR 2011 – ) will start an epic bike ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End – Ride 4 Alex and Rory#R4AR2020 – along with 12 others, who will take 12 days to complete the route.
Ride 4 Alex and Rory is in memory of Alex Baigler and Rory Morrison. Alex was just 43 years old when she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of malignant brain tumour. She died 15 months later, leaving two young children. Rory Morrison, who died in 2013, was a familiar and much-loved ‘voice of the nation’, perhaps best known for managing to pick-up and carry on when his colleague on the Today programme, Jim Naughty, collapsed laughing after spoonerising the then culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt’s name. His widow Nikki, was Alex’s cousin:
“Traumatic death tears some families apart but we are working hard to make sure that it brings us together, we want Alex’s children to grow up knowing her family, and Ride 4 Alex and Rory (R4AR) is part of that.”
They will be raising money for three charities, all working to find cures:
Headcase, The Brain Tumour Charity and The Rory Morrison WMUK Registry.
Jon was at the University of Bath with ride organiser, Peter Jenkins, brother-in-law to Rory Morrison, who was also a close personal friend and says ‘I am proud to be able to support the family in raising funds for these charities and raising awareness for the important work they do, in remembrance of Rory and Alex.
You can find out more details or donate here and we will bring you updates from Jon during the ride,
